Accent & How I Say Things Meme

My friend Niki had this newfangled meme that deals with one of my favorite topics:  accents!  (Hear her if you want.  She's southern, too!)  Actually it's "accents and regional names for things."   Apparently "you read off some words and then answer questions about what you call things."   Seems easy enough. I decided to copy Niki and not show my face.  Instead you will see my faceless figurines as you hear my very-cute voice.

So this is the meme in its written form:

If you want to follow along or do the Accent Vlog yourself, here are the words/questions:

Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught.

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

Did anything I say surprise you? Sure do hope you could understand me.  :)

Let me know if you do this meme so I can hear how you talk and what you call things!   Fun stuff, yes?

Heehee! I knew you couldn't resist. :-) I didn't think I sounded that Southern until I heard myself in my recording. lol

You sound cute :) Nothing surprising about your accent. My former boss with whom I worked with for seven years is from Alabama and my husbands two best friends are from Virginia and we meet them so often that we are pretty used to their ya'all accent :) It is fun though when our British children talk with their children and the way they fight over "it is called a lift not an elevator" :)

Greatly enjoyed this! So cute :)

That's me. :) I am wearing my favorite grubby shirt, in case you are wondering. :D

lol @ "far". I have relatives who pronounce it that way. One of my mom's sisters pronounces "tired" as "tarred". It's always amused me, in a nice way. :-)

Joni, I tried watching yours but it wants me to sign up for YouTube. Is yours private?

Very fun! I might have to do this later. :o) Wanted to see Joni's, too, but it said it was private. Unprivatize it Joni!!

You sound wonderful and sweet :D

Love your voice! The way you said Alabama! Hahaha! that was funny! And then oil and lawyer! hahaha!

I really didn't know the answers to some of the questions.I was thinking real hard what they could be and trying to figure out your replies :D Oh maaan! maybe I should try this...

I wanna do this! But I don't have an accent so it's likely not as much fun. Too bad I'm at work, I can't listen to it until tonight!

I would contribute, but my speech has been contaminated by years living elsewhere. Maybe I should do three versions - Buckeye, Hoosier, and Appalachian.

Jen, yours would be especially interesting since you have lived so many places.

I un-privatized mine. I thought I did that last night but apparently I didn't save the setting. :P

Jen, I'd like to hear that. :-)

I have a recording of myself from when I lived in northern Ohio when I was 17. I sounded so northern! I think that's where my accent went wrong. lol I lost some of my Southern accent. There's another recording of me when I was about 7 and I had a really deep Southern accent. We had been living in the sticks in southeastern NC.

Joni: "We call that normal." lol

Niki, I wasn't going to do it, but then it struck me later in the evening and I got an irresistible urge! Ha! When I heard yours I thought, "Wow, Niki sounds more southern than I remembered." :-D

Suroor, ahhhh! I didn't realize you had southern friends/acquaintances. Hehehe. Glad to hear how your children and the VA kids debate over what things are called. That's always fun! :)

Joni, I was laughing at your talk with Josh! :-P You know, I do say these words differently when I'm not reading them off a page saying them deliberately. So Josh is right in that I probably do say fire a bit more like "far" though NOT quite as far as "far." :) Because when I am talking fast and not thinking about, "Oh I have to say this for a video that I will post on my blog" it comes out a bit more naturally.

Also Andrew heard this and said "rolling" a house or yard is what we do...not "toilet papering" it. I just could not think of the right word while taping this! Now I wish I had made up my own list and included such things as "Laura." :)

Oh, and I loved seeing your video. I had to listen to it twice to enjoy the way you said things differently than folks do 'round these parts. :D

Cey, be sure you let me know if you do it. I miss things on FB sometimes and don't want to miss hearing your voice! :)

Lat, thanks for your kind words. Yes, you should do this! :D Then I can know how you speak and what kind of accent you have! ;)

Amber, surely you have an accent although I admit Florida accents aren't as pronounced as other places in the South. :)

JLNL, oh it would be fun to hear how those places have influenced your accent! :)

Niki, I have recordings of when I was about 4 and my accent was a lot heavier too! It's fun to listen to and cringe over from time to time. :D

Thank you all for your replies and, Niki, for the idea! :)

One last thing...Joni, you even say "meme" differently than I. All this time I thought it was Me Me and you said it like "meeeeem." Or that's what it sounded like you said. :)

Joni said...

Susie, I actually say "pill bug" not roly poly, but I was influenced by listening to you and Niki. People here use both, but I grew up saying pill bug.

I say meme (rhymes with cream) because that's how we are supposed to say it. ;) It's actually an invented word taken in the form of 'gene' (as in dna) - genes transmit information via genetic material, while a meme transmits information via person to person. Memes are urban legends, pictures or blogs that get forwarded from person to person, those "get to know you" thing-ies, etc.

Joni, thanks for that lesson on memes! I figured out what they were when I saw people using "meme" for these types of things, but i had no idea how the word evolved or how it was said. So thanks for the explanation! :)
