Damascus -- Neighborhood Kids

One thing I greatly loved about our time in Damascus was meeting some of the children. You may recall the sweetheart posing for me while his friends played soccer in the alley. Or the wonderful visit we had with Amer when we met his nieces and nephew. Well, today I will tell you about the neighborhood kids. These are children we met as we walked near the hostel.

First we'll start with this photo from my house. Notice the two marbles beside the cross. The first day we were in Damascus - Friday, January 30 - we saw a group of neighborhood children playing and one of them handed me those marbles and said "souvenir!" We had brought bags of individually-wrapped candy to share with people we met so we gave some to these enthusiastic and welcoming kids.

Here are a few of them with me on the first day

Later we were walking from St. Paul's Chapel and heard these kids greeting us, "Helloooo, welcome!" as they looked out from the top of the wall.

Here are some of our hostel neighborhood children one evening as we returned. They enjoyed seeing their pictures on our digital camera.

Here is one young man who lived next door to the hostel .. or maybe he was just visiting someone. But he gave us a friendly smile.
